Whether you are a first-year wrestler or a returning veteran, here is what to expect throughout the calendar year.
Many wrestlers begin here with preseason DPHS wrestling practices to prepare them for the rigors of the winter season.
Focus: Conditioning, fundamentals, and strength building.
Optional: Live competitions and extra practices are available through The Laboratory Wrestling Club.
This is the official DPHS season.
DPHS practices continue. Compete in HS dual meets and tournaments. Both JV and Varsity competitions.
There are no HS Laboratory Wrestling Club activities during the winter season.
For qualifying wrestlers, the season continues into a series of elimination tournaments:
League: Top 3–4 advance to CIF-SS Divisionals (Northern) aka CIF.
CIF: Top 5-6 boys / top 8 girls advance to CIF-SS Masters aka Masters.
Masters: Top 10 boys / top 8 girls advance to State. Over 500 schools. Often more competitive than many state tournaments.
State Championships – Bakersfield: 40 boys / 32 girls per weight class compete for state titles.
Optional, one-day tournament after the DPHS season.
Provides extra mat time and strong competition.
Style:
Last competition of the season to use folkstyle rules (High School style).
All fall and winter competitions used folkstyle rules.
The spring tournaments use Olympic rules.
Official DPHS season is over, but continuing in the spring is strongly encouraged. Wrestling is competitive, and spring tournaments help wrestlers stay sharp, gain extra mat time, and get ahead.
Competition Options: About 8 one-day local tournaments, including typically one at DPHS. These events are low-key and fun, perfect for learning and practicing new techniques — but there are also more challenging tournaments available.
The spring tournaments use Olympic rules: freestyle and Greco-Roman.
All fall and winter competitions used folkstyle rules (High School style). Learn about wrestling styles.
Registration through The Laboratory Wrestling Club.
Two-week break at the start of summer.
No practices or competitions.
Practices resume after the CIF break.
Limited competitions
Registration through The Laboratory Wrestling Club.
Note: Only fall and winter are part of the DPHS wrestling season. All other times are optional opportunities. When registering, sign up under The Laboratory Wrestling Club

High school Lab practices pause during the high school wrestling season and will resume in the spring.
All practices are in the Dos Pueblos High School Wrestling Room, located to the left of the gym.
Every spring and fall, there are multiple wrestling tournaments—most hosted by the Tri County Wrestling Association (TCWA) and sanctioned by USA Wrestling.
These are a great way for both new and returning wrestlers to gain experience, have fun, and keep improving.
Note for High School Wrestlers:
The spring and fall tournaments are not part of the DPHS wrestling season. They’re optional opportunities to compete outside of the regular season. When registering, sign up under The Laboratory Wrestling Club.
Every fall, there are a series of fun and simple one-day USA Wrestling tournaments. Typically we try to host one a Dos Pueblos every year.
It is great for preparation for the high school season. Practices focus on conditioning and fundamentals.

Each year in the early spring, right after the CIF State Championships, USA Wrestling–California hosts a Folkstyle State Tournament. This event gives wrestlers the chance to continue competing under folkstyle rules after the high school season ends and provides additional postseason mat time against strong competition from across the state.
In the spring, there are a number of one-day USA Wrestling tournaments. Typically we try to host one a Dos Pueblos every year. These events give wrestlers the opportunity to compete under Olympic styles, freestyle and Greco-Roman, rather than high school Folkstyle rules (which are used in fall and winter. Visit the Rules of Wrestling page to learn more about the differences between the wrestling styles.
This year the Dos Pueblos spring tournament is on April 4th, 2026.

These sessions provide additional practice opportunities for skill development and conditioning outside of regular team practices. Participation is optional but encouraged for wrestlers looking to get extra work in.
