Preseason runs from mid-August to early November, before the official CIF high school wrestling season begins. It’s designed to help athletes get in shape, sharpen skills, and gain valuable match experience through optional tournaments. Preseason practices focus on building a strong foundation so wrestlers are ready to compete when the official season starts in November.
Wrestling has a lot to learn, so we highly recommend that new wrestlers get extra mat time by joining our club team. These optional practices will help you develop fundamental wrestling skills needed when facing more experienced opponents.
August–September
4th period only
Optional Club Practices: Tuesdays & Thursdays after school (for athletes who have joined the club). Learn more.
October–November
4th period and after school until 4:30 p.m.
A current sports physical and school athletic clearance should be completed early in the preseason.
Forms and instructions can be found on the DPHS Athletics page: https://dphsa.org/forms/.
Before the official high school season begins, athletes can compete in fall USA Wrestling tournaments held on Saturdays from mid-September to early November. These events are a great way to gain extra matches, test skills, and build confidence. Wrestlers of all experience levels are encouraged to participate.
All athletes interested in preseason tournaments should obtain a USA Wrestling membership card as soon as possible. It can take time, especially for seniors.
The parents booster club provides USA Wrestling membership at NO COST to all high school athletes.
For full details and instructions on how to get your membership, see the Off-Season Tournaments page.
All seniors turning 17 by August 31 in the preseason are required to complete USA Wrestling SafeSport training before competing in preseason tournaments.
SafeSport promotes a safe and respectful environment and is designed to prevent abuse, misconduct, bullying, and harassment.
Preseason practices focus on building:

Basic wrestling technique
Drilling and live wrestling reps
Consistent attendance helps athletes step into the season in shape and prepared.
